Spain probes X, Meta, and TikTok for AI-generated child abuse material

The Spanish government has ordered prosecutors to investigate social media platforms X, Meta, and TikTok for allegedly distributing AI-generated child sexual abuse material, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Tuesday.

“These platforms are undermining the mental health, dignity, and rights of our children,” Sanchez wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

“The state cannot allow this. The impunity of these giants must end.”

The investigation comes amid growing concerns across Europe about the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in generating harmful and illegal content online.

Authorities are particularly focused on protecting minors from AI-generated sexualized imagery, which can be rapidly produced and shared on social media platforms.

Earlier this month, Sanchez outlined a series of measures aimed at curbing online abuse and enhancing child safety. One of the key proposals includes restricting access to social media for individuals under the age of 16. Officials say these measures are intended to hold technology companies accountable for content circulated on their platforms and to prevent minors from exposure to harmful material.

Spain’s move echoes broader EU concerns, as regulators across the continent have increased scrutiny of social media platforms and AI, emphasising user safety, data protection, and legal compliance.

The government’s order empowers prosecutors to examine how X, Meta, and TikTok monitor, moderate, and prevent the distribution of illegal AI-generated content, and whether existing safeguards are sufficient.

The outcome of the investigation could result in fines, stricter regulations, or changes in platform policies to prevent further exploitation of AI technology for harmful purposes.
