Experts and studies have highlighted that sipping a cup of the herbal infusion before bed may help induce relaxation, ease anxiety, and enhance overall sleep quality.

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) has long been used for its calming properties. Research has shown that it can increase levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, a naturally occurring amino acid that slows down activity in the central nervous system.

The result can be better sleep, pain relief, and an elevated mood. Studies have also suggested that passionflower may reduce preoperative anxiety and assist those tapering off certain anxiety medications, such as benzodiazepines.

For those seeking restful nights, drinking passionflower tea may be especially effective.

Animal studies have demonstrated that a single dose can boost melatonin levels, the hormone responsible for sleepiness.

While more research in humans is needed, early evidence points to modest improvements in sleep quality.

Brewing the tea is simple. Steep one tablespoon (about 2 grams) of dried passionflower or a tea bag in a cup of hot water for six to eight minutes. For a stronger infusion, allow it to steep 10 to 15 minutes.

The flavor is mild, grassy, and earthy, and adding a touch of honey can enhance sweetness. Experts recommend drinking one cup per night for at least seven days to notice effects.

While passionflower is generally safe, it can cause sleepiness or dizziness in some people and may interact with certain medications.

Pregnant individuals should avoid it, as its effects on the fetus are unknown.

Consulting a healthcare professional before starting regular consumption is advised.

Overall, passionflower tea offers a natural approach to relaxation and improved sleep. Its calming, mood-boosting, and pain-relieving properties make it a valuable option for those seeking better nights without prescription medications.
