Probiotics are frequently celebrated as the ultimate guardians of gut health, with research consistently proving their ability to repair and restore our internal microbial ecosystems.

A January 2024 study highlighted how these live microorganisms can normalise gut flora even after the heavy disruption caused by antibiotics.

Beyond mere digestion, a healthy gut influences everything from radiant skin to mental clarity and even the regulation of blood glucose and insulin sensitivity.

To help people harness these benefits without breaking the bank, Shalini Sudhakar, a nutritionist and yoga teacher from Bangalore, recently shared a traditional secret on Instagram: fermented kanji. While store-bought probiotic drinks are effective, they are often pricey and laden with additives.

Conversely, common staples like homemade idlis, though nutritious, may not provide a high enough concentration of beneficial bacteria to truly transform gut resilience truly.

Fermented kanji offers a potent, affordable alternative that is incredibly simple to prepare. Shalini shared, “All you need is two tablespoons of rice, yoghurt, and some water. And most importantly, leave it alone. So it can ferment, and gut-friendly bacteria can breed and grow. Next morning, add it to a blender with a little salt.”

This natural fermentation process allows gut-friendly bacteria to thrive overnight, creating a refreshing tonic that outperforms processed options.

By integrating this ancient wisdom into a modern diet, individuals can support their entire well-being through better nutrient absorption and metabolic health, proving that the best medicine is often found right in our own kitchens.
