Tesla Europe plans to integrate xAI’s Grok AI chatbot into its vehicle infotainment systems in the UK and eight other European markets.

The move comes as Tesla faces declining sales across Europe, with deliveries down 27% in 2025, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).

The drop coincides with rising competition from more affordable battery electric vehicles, such as those produced by China’s BYD.

Elon Musk’s controversial political statements and endorsements of extremist figures in the UK and Germany have also reportedly affected Tesla’s brand appeal, according to Brand Finance.

Grok, developed by Musk’s xAI, previously merged with X (formerly Twitter) and has been subject to regulatory probes in Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Past issues include generating deepfake images of real people without consent and spreading antisemitic content. Reports have also raised concerns about minors accessing Grok in Tesla vehicles.

Experts warn that integrating AI chatbots into vehicle systems may increase driver distraction.

Mike Nelson, an automotive safety researcher, described the technology as adding a new “distraction layer,” even in hands-free mode.

Rayid Ghani, a Carnegie Mellon professor, emphasised the need for practical evaluations to understand how chatbots affect driving behaviour and information needs.

Tesla has not clarified how it will moderate Grok for minors or implement safeguards in European vehicles.
