A tragic incident in Savannah, Georgia, claimed the life of a beloved teacher as a man fled an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) traffic stop.

Oscar Vasquez Lopez, 38, faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, following the death of Linda Davis, an educator at Hesse K-8 School.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE attempted to stop Vasquez Lopez, who had a final order of removal issued in 2024, around 7:45am on Monday.

Although he initially complied, Vasquez Lopez made a reckless U-turn and ran a red light before crashing into Davis’ vehicle at the intersection of Whitefield Avenue and Truman Parkway, near the school.

Paramedics pronounced Davis dead at the scene; Vasquez Lopez was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Chatham County police, who were not involved in the ICE operation, arrived after the crash.

Vasquez Lopez remains in custody. DHS officials warned of the dangers of fleeing federal law enforcement, emphasizing that resisting arrest can endanger officers and innocent bystanders.

The Savannah school community mourns the loss of Davis, who had recently joined Hesse K-8. Principal Alonna McMullen described her as an “exceptional educator” dedicated to ensuring every student felt supported and valued.

“Her kindness, patience, and enthusiasm created a nurturing environment for her students and inspired those around her,” McMullen said.

Davis’ death has left students, staff, and the broader community grieving the loss of a teacher who had devoted her career to the success and well-being of every child.
