Those stackable black plastic containers have become the universal symbol of modern food delivery, but they may be harbouring a toxic secret.

Dr Nandita Iyer, a medical doctor and nutrition expert, is raising the alarm over the safety of these ubiquitous boxes.

In a recent update, she explained that black plastic is often a "mishmash" of recycled materials, including potentially contaminated electronic waste from old televisions and remotes.

“Black plastic is often made by recycling potentially contaminated plastic waste,” Dr Iyer noted. The dark dye isn't just a style choice; it helps conceal traces of old PVC and flame retardants that are definitely not food-safe.

The danger intensifies when these containers meet heat, acids, or fats—the core components of most takeaway curries.

She warns that this combination "leeches higher levels of harmful compounds, including these brominated flame retardants and heavy metals" into your meal.

While she doesn't suggest a total kitchen purge, Dr Iyer urges a vital swap. Even white plastic or paper-lined boxes are marginally better, though the latter still pose leaching risks.

Her primary advice is to avoid the microwave at all costs when using these containers. “So when you get your food in these containers, transfer them to food safe glass or steel containers immediately.

And definitely do not microwave them in these black plastic containers,” she advised. By making this simple change, you can enjoy your favourite takeaway without the side order of microplastics and industrial chemicals.
