Chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse, but their "frog spawn" consistency often leaves people cold. Dr Karan Rajan, a popular UK surgeon, has shared a brilliant hack to fix the "ick" factor while actually boosting the health benefits.

In an Instagram video posted on Wednesday, he suggests grinding the seeds into a fine powder to transform your gut health routine.

Why ground chia seeds are superior

Grinding doesn't just fix the texture; it changes how your body processes the seeds. Dr Rajan explains: “When you grind chia seeds, the fibre structure remains intact.

You don't lose any of the prebiotic benefit, but the particle size changes everything for fermentation and mouth feel.”

This finer texture allows for more even hydration in the colon, meaning “your microbiome gets fed properly. Same fibre, but better outcome.”

Better taste and absorption

For many, the gel-like slime is a dealbreaker. Dr Rajan notes: “The best part is with ground chia seeds, you get less gelatinous frogs spawn texture, which is one of the main reasons people quit.”

Beyond the better mouthfeel, breaking the seed coat unlocks nutrients. He adds: “Now, your digestive enzymes can access the omega-3 fatty acids inside, thus increasing omega-3 bioavailability.”

Storage and safety

You can easily whizz them up in a coffee grinder, but there is a catch. “The ground seeds can oxidise faster than the whole one, so keep them cool,” the surgeon advises. To keep them fresh, store your powder in an airtight container in the fridge.
