Charli XCX supports Ukraine amid Berlin event planner's alleged Russian links
'The Moment' is a meta mockumentary about an emerging star embarking on her maiden arena tour
As Charli xcx‘s The Moment makes its way through various festivals, the pop sensation's shift to acting has brought about some unexpected international consequences.
After the mockumentary premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last weekend, the triple Grammy winner recently voiced her support for Ukraine, clarifying that she was unaware of DJ Anastasia Shevtsova's alleged connections to Russia at the afterparty.
"Hey everyone! For clarification, neither I nor my team were informed about the alleged connections regarding the Berlin party," Charli shared on her Instagram Story.
"I want to take this moment to express that I oppose the horrors executed by the Russian government in Ukraine and stand with the Ukrainian people."
Charli's remarks followed an article pointing out that Shevtsova’s mother, Zhanna Shevtsova, founded Russia's Tradition Foundation, which has reportedly collaborated with Vladimir Putin’s Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives and visited occupied Ukrainian areas since Russia’s 2022 invasion.
Meanwhile, Anastasia Shevtsova, also known as Petit, has distanced herself from her mother’s reported Russian connections in her own statement.
"Given recent developments, I feel compelled to say a few words," she wrote in a statement on Instagram. "I have relatives in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. This ongoing crisis impacts me personally and profoundly. I don't wish for harm, violence, or suffering upon anyone. What is transpiring is devastating for millions of families, mine included."
Last month, Charli debuted The Moment at Sundance, a meta mockumentary about an emerging star embarking on her maiden arena tour.
It delves into her rapid rise to fame through a hyper-pop comedic lens, examining the bizarre nature of celebrity life and her struggle to preserve her personal identity and creative autonomy.
