A Sydney restaurant has accused a visiting family of deliberately planting hair on their own plate in an attempt to avoid paying a $600 bill.

The incident reportedly took place at Pony, where the family from Ireland ordered high-end items, including a nearly four-pound tomahawk steak, along with entrées and drinks.

CCTV footage reviewed by staff appears to show a man reaching under his arm and placing a blonde hair onto his plate after finishing his meal.

Neil Nolan, Pony’s head chef for 20 years, called the alleged tactic unprecedented. “I’ve never seen this ever before. Like, this was another level of trying to scam,” he told 7 News

Staff noted the hair did not match any of the kitchen team, all of whom had darker hair.

According to Nolan, the complaint only arose after the group had completed their meal. When confronted, the man reportedly became agitated, raising his voice and refusing to pay.

His wife allegedly broke down in tears as other diners looked on, prompting management to waive the bill to defuse the situation.

Pony later discovered that similar allegations were made by what is believed to be the same family at another nearby venue. Nolan reported the matter to police, who said little immediate action could be taken.

In response, he shared the CCTV footage on social media to warn other hospitality operators.

The contact information used to book the table was allegedly false, and the family is thought to have left the Sydney area.

“This kind of behavior puts restaurants in a difficult position and can be very damaging,” Nolan said, highlighting the challenge of protecting staff and business while maintaining hospitality standards.
