No proof suspect visited Nancy Guthrie's home before kidnapping, Sheriff claims
Nancy Guthrie, mother of 'Today' co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen on January 31
The sheriff of Pima County has informed that there is "no evidence" suggesting that the masked individual seen on doorbell camera footage at Nancy Guthrie's Arizona residence had been there before the day the 84-year-old is presumed to have been abducted.
On Monday (February 23), reports surfaced suggesting the man in the footage might have visited Nancy's home before February 1.
“Currently, there is no supporting evidence for that… and no evidence proving it happened on a single day,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos informed on Monday. “This is mere speculation at this point and remains under thorough investigation.”
On February 10, the FBI unveiled photos and video of the masked individual appearing at Guthrie's doorstep. The footage has not verified activities spanning two days, including February 1, when officials believe she was taken.
Nanos also discussed whether the masked individual might have come back on a different day.
“It's a possibility,” Nanos states regarding the masked individual returning another day, as he appears without a backpack or holster in one of the recordings. “We simply lack the evidence to confirm each image's date… There is no date or timestamp, and our investigation is ongoing.”
The Pima County Sheriff's Department issued a statement on Monday, highlighting the same uncertainty.
"We recognise that earlierly disseminated doorbell footage features a suspect in variable appearances, some with a backpack and others without. Since these images do not carry a date or timestamp, any claim that they were captured on distinct days is speculative," officials stated.
"This remains an active criminal inquiry," officials added. "Like in every investigation, findings will be driven by reliable evidence and proven facts. Speculation lacking factual basis does not assist our investigative efforts."
Guthrie disappeared from her remote Tucson, Arizona, home after being last seen on January 31.
Consequently, local, state, and federal authorities have swarmed the location, dedicating nearly a month to exploring the harsh desert surroundings in search of any sign of her or clues to aid their inquiry.
