Dave Franco has opened up about what keeps his nearly decade-long marriage to Alison Brie strong, and it all comes down to friendship.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the Los Angeles premiere of Hoppers at the El Capitan Theatre on Monday, Feb. 23, Franco, 40, shared the simple but meaningful foundation of his relationship as the couple approaches their ninth wedding anniversary next month.

“Honestly, I think it’s about being friends above anything else,” Franco said. “You gotta want to hang out with this person, and you gotta be able to laugh with them.”

“You can be funny to the right person,” he continued. “Find that person who you laugh with, and that’s so, so important.”

Franco walked the carpet with Brie, 43, by his side as his plus-one, marking another public appearance for the couple who have long kept their relationship largely private.

The pair wed in March 2017 in an intimate ceremony held on the balcony of their Los Angeles home, six years after meeting at a 2011 Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans.

The low-key event reflected their shared approach to marriage.

“Neither of us was ever big into weddings,” Franco previously said. “At the end of the day, we did it exactly how we wanted. In a cheesy way, that ended up being one of the best days of our lives.”

After exchanging vows, the couple celebrated with close friends at Pizzeria Mozza, the beloved L.A. restaurant helmed by chef Nancy Silverton.

Their romance began in 2011, with the couple announcing their engagement in August 2015 before tying the knot two years later.

Over the years, they’ve maintained a tradition that keeps their love story alive — even if it’s slightly “embarrassing.”
