Finding clumps of hair in your brush or shower drain is a distressing experience that many of us try to hide with dry shampoo or volumising sprays.

However, your hair is often the first internal alarm bell to ring when the body undergoes "nutritional shifts, hormonal changes, illness, or lifestyle disruptions," according to health expert Dr Shiv Singh Shekhawat.

If your hair feels limp and thin, it is crucial to look beyond the bathroom cabinet to find the root cause.

One common culprit is Telogen Effluvium, a temporary shedding phase triggered by significant physical or emotional stress.

Dr Shekhawat notes that this is often "a delayed reaction your hair has to physical or emotional shocks," typically beginning 8–12 weeks after the stressful event.

While it usually resolves within six months, prioritising sleep and balanced meals is essential for a smooth recovery.

Nutritional gaps are another major driver. Modern diets often lack iron, vitamin D, and B12, causing the hair shaft to weaken.

Finally, hormonal shifts—linked to PCOS, thyroid issues, or the postpartum period—can cause diffuse thinning. These fluctuations often come with other symptoms like fatigue, acne, or weight changes.

If you are noticing persistent shedding, it may be time to consult a professional rather than relying on products that only offer a quick fix.

Addressing these internal imbalances is the only way to ensure your hair grows back stronger and healthier in the long term, moving past the frustration of a "bad hair day."
