Maintaining a healthy digestive system is a fundamental pillar of overall wellbeing, often requiring a savvy mix of exercise and nutrition. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a distinguished gastroenterologist with credentials from Harvard and Stanford, recently took to social media to reveal three powerhouse seeds that "clean it like a brush."

On Tuesday, he explained that these tiny nutritional blueprints are essential for a thriving gut microbiome and regular bowel movements.

First on his list are chia seeds, which are "packed with soluble fibre and form a gel when soaked." This gel helps regulate blood sugar and supports healthy bacteria.

However, Dr Sethi warns that you must never eat them dry; instead, soak them for at least 20 minutes—ideally overnight—in yoghurt or almond milk.

Next, he described flaxseeds as “tiny but powerful.” These are brimming with Omega-3 fatty acids that fight inflammation. There is a catch, though: the body cannot process whole seeds effectively.

To unlock benefits like reduced bloating and better cholesterol management, you must grind them before adding a tablespoon to your morning oatmeal or smoothie.

Finally, Dr Sethi highlighted basil seeds, often called sabja seeds. Though they resemble chia, he noted they “are even cooler” because they expand much faster.

Frequently used in Ayurvedic medicine, they offer similar soluble fibre perks. Integrating these three seeds into your weekly routine provides a natural, effective way to keep your digestive tract moving smoothly while feeding the beneficial bacteria your body relies on.
