Fans of the cult animated hit Smiling Friends received bittersweet news this week as creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel announced the show is coming to an end.

In an audio message shared on social media, the duo confirmed that after the conclusion of Season 3, they have decided to stop.

However, they left a parting gift: two "straggler" episodes will air on 12 April. These aren't a formal finale but rather "little rogue planets" that didn’t fit the main run.

The decision to end the Adult Swim favourite was entirely their own. After years of relentless work, the creators admitted to feeling drained.

“After we finished Season 3, Zach and I both had the same feeling where we feel pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this," Cusack explained. Hadel echoed this, prioritising quality over longevity.

“We wouldn’t want to be doing more seasons with half-hearted or burnt out or not feeling it. That’s not fair to us. It’s not fair to the audience to give you guys f*cking slop,” he added.

Both creators expressed immense gratitude for the show’s explosive success, noting that the fan art and memes far exceeded their expectations.

While they are moving on to launch Zam Studios, their new independent venture, they haven't completely ruled out a future return to the world of Pim and Charlie.

For now, they want to "leave them wanting more" while they are still at the top of their game.
