Channel 5 producing drama on Madeleine McCann's mother's interrogation

Channel 5 (now known as 5) is creating a factual drama centered on the questioning of Madeleine McCann’s mother.

Suspect: Kate McCann will depict, using official records, documentary footage, and taped testimonies, the incident three months following McCann’s disappearance when Kate McCann was interrogated by Portuguese authorities.

Killing Eve actress Laura Bayston stars as Kate McCann in this 90-minute piece, directed by Paula Wittig and penned by Philip Ralph.

Three months post the vanishing of her daughter, Kate McCann was summoned by the Portuguese police for interrogation. 

An initially routine inquiry soon escalated in tension – authorities informed her that their doubts about her innocence had grown, labeling her as an ‘arguida’ (a formal suspect). 

Investigators claimed there was evidence implicating her in the disappearance and warned that, without a confession, she might face murder allegations. 

The drama highlights a gripping 48-hour stint that threatened to impede the ongoing search for Madeleine, placing the McCanns in a battle for their liberty.

Paramount network 5 has been venturing into the realm of factual dramas lately, including developing a production about disgraced BBC anchor Huw Edwards starring Martin Clunes, and another concerning Tracie Andrews, who alleged her fiancé fell victim to a road rage incident, only to face accusations of murder herself.

The McCann and Andrews productions are being handled by Orchard Studios, an independent production company led by former Prime Video UK executive Dan Grabiner.

The case of Madeleine McCann has remained a focal point in British media for almost two decades. 

Numerous documentaries, including a noted Netflix project by Pulse Films, have covered her story. 

One principal suspect, Christian Brückner, was recently released from jail after completing a different sentence.
