While we all know that fruit is good for us, not every snack is created equal when it comes to digestive health. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist, has shared a helpful guide to navigating the fibre content of our favourite fruits.

In a recent update on Sunday, the expert—who trained at AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford—ranked eight common fruits to help those "counting their macros make an informed choice."

Topping the list as a fibre powerhouse is the humble guava, boasting eight to nine grams per cup. Raspberries follow closely with eight grams, while a medium pear offers around six grams.

Surprisingly, the summer favourite watermelon sits at the bottom of the scale, providing just 0.6 grams per cup. These differences are crucial because dietary fibre—a plant-based carbohydrate the body cannot absorb—plays a vital role in our wellbeing.

Soluble fibre, found in apples and bananas, helps lower cholesterol, whereas insoluble fibre in nuts and wheat adds bulk to aid digestion.

Meeting daily requirements is essential for long-term health. According to the Mayo Clinic, men under 50 should aim for 38 grams daily, while women in the same age bracket need 25 grams.

As Dr Sethi highlights, choosing high-fibre options like guavas or raspberries can make hitting these targets much easier.

Whether you are looking to stabilise blood sugar or simply keep your system moving, understanding these rankings allows for a much smarter approach to your five-a-day. Small dietary tweaks can lead to big improvements in your gut health.
