Meta Platforms has reportedly struck a multi-billion-pound deal to rent artificial intelligence chips from Google, a move that signals a significant shift in the high-stakes AI arms race.

According to The Information, this multi-year agreement grants Meta access to Google’s specialised Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to develop its next generation of advanced models.

It is a strategic pivot for Mark Zuckerberg’s firm, which has traditionally relied heavily on Nvidia’s hardware to power its vast data centres.

Google has been aggressively promoting its in-house TPUs as a "viable alternative" to Nvidia's market-leading processors.

This push is part of a broader effort to prove to investors that its massive AI investments are yielding real returns through cloud revenue.

Beyond just renting, Meta is also allegedly in talks to purchase these chips directly for its own facilities as early as next year.

This follows a recent spree of chip-buying by Meta, which includes a massive £47 billion commitment to AMD and ongoing deals with Nvidia.

The tech giants are currently pouring staggering sums into infrastructure to satisfy the global hunger for AI.

Google is even reportedly working with a large investment firm to fund a joint venture that would lease these chips to other hungry customers.

While neither Meta nor Google has officially commented on the specifics, the deal highlights how even the fiercest rivals are finding common ground to navigate the global chip shortage. Investors will be watching closely to see how this colossal capital spending translates into long-term profit.
