Viola Davis could hardly contain her excitement as she announced Michael B. Jordan’s win for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role at the 2026 Actor Awards on Sunday, March 1, in Los Angeles.

Davis, 60, gasped and shouted in surprise while opening the envelope to reveal Jordan’s name, a moment that drew one of the night’s largest standing ovations as the first-time winner, 39, made his way to the stage.

Jordan earned the award for his dual-role performance in Sinners, a 1930s-set vampire thriller in which he plays twins Smoke and Stack, who return to their Mississippi hometown to open a nightclub for Black patrons—only to have the night disrupted by a vampire drawn to the musical talents of their cousin.

The film also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, and Omar Benson Miller, and was written and directed by Jordan’s longtime collaborator, Ryan Coogler.

“I’ve been a fan of this movie from the start,” Davis said before handing the trophy to Jordan, reflecting the enthusiasm she’s shown for the film throughout its awards season.

She previously led a December 2025 panel discussion featuring Jordan and the cast.

Sinners also claimed the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award on March 1, adding to the film’s growing list of accolades.

Just a week earlier at the BAFTAs, it became the most decorated movie by a Black director in the ceremony’s history, winning three awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Supporting Actress (Wunmi Mosaku).

The film has also shattered records with a historic 16 Academy Award nominations, marking a major milestone as the 2026 Oscars wrap up on March 15.

Jordan won over fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme, Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon, and Jesse Plemons Bugonia.
