For decades, we have been told that a foaming, minty scrub is the gold standard for oral hygiene. However, Dr Mark Burhenne, a dentist with 40 years of experience, suggests this habit might actually be "nuking" your dental health.

In a recent warning to his Instagram followers, he claimed that many popular toothpastes are destroying the delicate oral microbiome, ultimately making cavities worse rather than preventing them.

The problem lies in the balance of bacteria. Beneficial microbes are essential for buffering acid and aiding remineralisation, yet many "natural" toothpastes contain essential oils like tea tree or clove that act as broad-spectrum antimicrobials.

“They don’t know the difference between the bacteria destroying your teeth and the bacteria protecting them. You’re nuking the whole ecosystem in your mouth twice a day,” Dr Burhenne shared.

He explained that these ingredients, alongside harsh foaming detergents like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), strip the mouth's lining and prevent natural repair.

To protect your teeth, Dr Burhenne advocates for a "less is more" approach. He recommends switching to products that support the mouth’s natural environment.

Dr Burhenne’s checklist for a better paste:

  • No SLS: Avoid detergents that create excessive foam but irritate the mouth.
  • No essential oils: Stop using antibacterial oils that kill off the "good guys."
  • Nano-hydroxyapatite: Look for this mineral, which can deposit into early lesions to help reverse small cavities.

“You want a toothpaste that supports the environment, not one that treats your mouth like a biohazard zone,” he concluded.
