As the 'Quit ChatGPT' trend gains momentum, many users are looking to migrate their digital lives to rivals like Google Gemini or Anthropic’s Claude.

However, in the rush to switch platforms, there is a significant pitfall that could lead to the permanent loss of years of research, creative projects, and personal notes.

The most critical mistake you can make is abandoning your account without first securing a full backup of your data.

Once a chat is deleted, the clock starts ticking. According to the OpenAI help page, deleted chats will undergo permanent deletion after 30 days, except for those chats which have already been de-identified or need to stay intact for security and legal purposes.

Relying on customer support to retrieve lost data is a gamble you likely won't win, as the system is designed to make these conversations inaccessible through the interface, API, and support channels alike.

How to download your ChatGPT chats?

To export your data from OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform:

  1. Open ChatGPT on your internet browser
  2. Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner
  3. Select Settings
  4. Go to Data Controls
  5. Click Export next to the option Export Data
  6. Complete the on-screen instructions to complete downloading.

Taking five minutes to follow these steps ensures your intellectual property moves with you. Whether you need old responses for work or personal reference, having a local archive prevents a clean break from becoming a costly one.
