Billy Porter reveals he was 'dead for three days' during sepsis battle
Billy Porter was placed on life support following a routine medical appointment
Celebrated entertainer Billy Porter has revealed he is a "walking miracle" after a harrowing battle with urosepsis that left him on life support for days.
Speaking on the Outlaws podcast on Monday, the 56-year-old star shared the graphic reality of a medical emergency that began during a "routine check" in September 2025.
What was intended to be a standard appointment escalated when doctors discovered a kidney stone trapped in his urethra, triggering a massive infection.
The situation became life-threatening within minutes. Porter was placed on an ECMO machine—a form of life support—to keep him alive.
"I was dead for three days. I am a miracle," Porter revealed, detailing how the infection led to urosepsis. The crisis was compounded by compartment syndrome in his leg, requiring surgeons to perform an emergency procedure to prevent amputation.
The severity of the illness forced Porter’s sudden withdrawal from the Broadway production of Cabaret, which subsequently closed.
Reflecting on his recovery, the actor admitted he had previously silenced his true self for fear of losing his "A-list" status. Now, he views his survival as a mandate to live authentically.
"Don't you ever stop telling the truth again," he remarked of his new outlook. Although his four-month journey has been "very, very challenging," Porter confirmed he is on the road to a full recovery.
He expressed immense gratitude for the public’s support, noting that he felt every prayer during his time in the coma.
