Travis Kelce shares emotional thoughts on life after the NFL
The NFL tight end admits the thrill of playoff battles is something he may never feel again
Travis Kelce has opened up about the moments he believes he will miss the most once he eventually steps away from professional football.
The 36-year-old tight end, who is engaged to pop superstar Taylor Swift, is approaching a key moment in his career as his two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs is set to expire later this month.
While Kelce has not yet confirmed whether he will continue playing, he admitted he has begun thinking about life after football.
Speaking with his brother, former NFL star Jason Kelce, on their podcast New Heights, Kelce reflected on the thrill of competing in the league’s biggest moments.
“It’s just those moments in the big games,” he said. “The feeling of having to rise to the occasion, be there for 70,000 people that are all counting on you out there, outside of just the guys that you go to war with.”
Kelce explained that the adrenaline of playoff battles and high-stakes matchups is something he knows will be difficult to replace.
“Those moments of rising to the occasion in the heat of the battle, in the playoffs and all the big games out there,” he continued. “That’s a feeling that I know I’ll never get again.”
Over 13 NFL seasons, Kelce has helped lead the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories — accomplishments he says he will always cherish.
“Those are the things that you cherish the most,” he said. “Especially if you’re fortunate enough to be in the playoffs and make runs at it. The satisfaction that you get and the successful feeling you get of all the hard work that you put in finally paying off, I think that’ll be one of the things I miss the most.”
Kelce had previously said he hoped to make a decision about his future by early March in order to give the Chiefs clarity as they prepare for the upcoming draft and free agency period.
“I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity, whether I come back or not — or whether they want me back or not,” he said in November. “I’d like to make that decision before they’ve got to get draft picks and free agency opens to fill the roster appropriately.”
Meanwhile, Jason Kelce, who retired from the NFL in 2024 after a decorated career, recently encouraged his younger brother to take some time before making a final decision.
“In my opinion, to nail that decision, you’ve got to step away from the game for a little bit,” Jason said during an appearance on Monday Night Football.
He also urged Travis to focus on enjoying the remainder of the season.
“Play these last three games, enjoy them with your teammates, enjoy that with your coaches,” he said.
“The team’s going to be different whether you come back or not next year. So enjoy these last three games and then let it sink in. It’ll come to you with time.”
