Magnesium has recently become a trending topic on social media, with many users praising the mineral for improving sleep and overall health.

However, experts say magnesium’s benefits go far beyond viral wellness claims.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that helps the body perform a wide range of functions. It supports the brain, muscles, nerves and immune system, while also helping regulate metabolism and activate vitamin D.

According to health guidelines, women aged 19 to 64 should aim for around 270 mg of magnesium per day, while men in the same age group should consume about 300 mg.

The mineral can be found naturally in many everyday foods. Leafy green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes are among the best sources.

Fish such as mackerel also contain significant amounts, while meat and dairy products provide smaller quantities.

Research suggests magnesium may benefit brain health, improve mood and support better sleep, though experts say more studies are needed to fully confirm these effects. It has also been linked to improved heart health and stronger bones.

Despite growing interest in supplements, nutrition specialists stress that most people can meet their magnesium needs through a balanced diet.

Foods rich in magnesium also provide additional nutrients such as fibre, protein, and healthy fats.

Experts warn that excessive supplementation can cause side effects, including digestive problems, and recommend consulting a doctor before taking magnesium supplements.
