Why your weighing scale is biggest enemy of your fitness journey
Negative mindsets such as "I can't stay consistent" are major barriers to success
Achieving sustainable weight loss is a complex journey that demands more than just physical exertion; it requires a resilient mindset.
Amaka, a certified nutritionist and fitness coach, highlighted this on 6 March by identifying four psychological and lifestyle red flags that often derail progress.
In an insightful social media briefing, she warned that these "early warning signs" can trap individuals in a perpetual loop of failure if not addressed.
The psychological barriers
The most prevalent pitfall is an obsessive focus on the weighing scale. Amaka notes that two weeks is rarely enough to see significant changes, even with a calorie-deficient diet.
When the numbers stagnate, many fall into the trap of overeating or quitting entirely. To combat this, she suggests monitoring progress through body measurements and photographs instead.
Furthermore, a defeatist attitude can be equally damaging. Amaka urges those on a fitness journey to abandon negative phrases such as: “I can’t exercise”, “I can’t lose weight”, or “I can’t stay consistent”.
Consistency and biological factors
Physical progress often invites a dangerous sense of complacency:
Premature breaks: Pausing a regime after losing only half the target weight frequently leads to regaining the lost kilograms.
Sleep deprivation: Lack of rest elevates cortisol levels and disrupts hunger-regulating hormones. This biological shift actively hinders weight loss, regardless of diet.
Amaka concludes that success depends on maintaining a positive, consistent lifestyle. By focusing on reaching long-term goals rather than immediate gratification, individuals can finally break the cycle of "never losing weight."
