Nutritionists explain the health benefits of eating bananas every day
Eating bananas daily can help you feel full longer and regulate blood sugar
Bananas are more than just a convenient snack—they’re packed with nutrients that can support your health in multiple ways.
Experts say incorporating this affordable and widely available fruit into your daily routine can help with digestion, blood sugar regulation, and heart health.
Staying fuller longer
Eating bananas regularly can help keep you satisfied between meals. Their dietary fiber and resistant starch slow down digestion, meaning food moves through your stomach more gradually. “This helps you feel fuller for longer,” says Matthew Landry, PhD, RDN, assistant professor of population health at the University of California, Irvine.
Boosting digestion
Bananas are rich in fiber and contain both pectin and resistant starch. Pectin, found in ripe bananas, softens stool and eases constipation, while resistant starch in green bananas acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria, explains Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, of Nutrition Now Counseling.
Regulating blood sugar and energy
The fiber in bananas slows carbohydrate absorption, helping maintain steady blood sugar levels. “The combination of simple and complex carbs provides both quick and sustained energy,” Manaker adds. Vitamin B6 further supports energy production in the body.
Supporting heart health
High in potassium, bananas help counteract sodium’s effects, promoting relaxed blood vessel walls and healthy blood pressure. “Potassium encourages the kidneys to excrete excess sodium, which can lower overall blood pressure,” says Manaker.
Antioxidant Protection
Bananas contain phenolic compounds, carotenoids, and flavonoids that protect cells from oxidative damage, potentially reducing long-term disease risk, notes Landry.
How many bananas should you eat?
For most people, one to two bananas a day is safe and beneficial. However, people with chronic kidney disease or those monitoring blood sugar should consider portion sizes and consult a healthcare provider.
While bananas are nutritious, experts emphasize variety. “It’s best to enjoy many types of fruit as part of a balanced diet,” Manaker advises.
