Expert tips on how to identify and treat post-massage red bumps
Friction during a massage can create tiny skin breaks that trap harmful bacteria
It is a common occurrence for individuals to find small red bumps on their skin following a relaxing massage. While many immediately suspect an allergy to treatment oils, medical experts suggest the cause may be more biological than chemical.
Dr Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and interventional pain physician, recently shed light on this phenomenon, explaining that post-massage flare-ups are often linked to how the skin reacts to physical manipulation.
What are those pesky red bumps?
Dr Sood explains that these blemishes are frequently the result of irritated hair follicles or folliculitis. The combination of intense pressure and repetitive friction can create microscopic tears in the skin.
“Those red bumps after massage aren't always an allergy. Sometimes it's irritated hair follicles. Those small red bumps can be folliculitis, which is inflammation or infection of hair follicles,” Dr Sood noted.
He added that massage oils can trap heat and moisture, thereby allowing bacteria such as Staphylococcus to overgrow within compromised follicles.
The importance of hygiene
Maintaining a sterile environment is vital for preventing these infections. Dr Sood highlights that while gloves are not always mandatory, rigorous hand hygiene and sanitised surfaces are non-negotiable.
“Hygiene matters. Clean hands, sanitized surfaces, and appropriate infection control practices significantly reduce risk,” he stated.
When to worry?
Most reactions are mild and vanish quickly. However, Dr Sood warns that medical advice should be sought if the condition deteriorates.
“Massage itself isn't the problem; poor skin barrier protection and hygiene are,” he concluded, advising evaluation if bumps become painful, spread, or drain pus.
