Cardiovascular experts are highlighting a critical gender gap in healthcare, warning that heart disease remains the leading cause of death for women despite being frequently misdiagnosed.

Dr Dmitry Yaranov, a cardiologist and heart-transplant specialist, marked International Women’s Day on Sunday by sharing eight essential facts to dispel the myth that heart conditions primarily affect men.

He noted that historical diagnostic standards, often based on male physiology, contribute to a "scary reality" where female symptoms are dismissed.

Differing symptoms and risks

A primary concern for clinicians is that women often lack the "crushing chest pain" typically associated with cardiac events.

“Heart attack symptoms in women can look very different. Instead of crushing chest pain, women may experience nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness, jaw pain, or shortness of breath,” Dr Yaranov explained.

This divergence often leads to delayed treatment, making heart attacks statistically more dangerous for women.

Studies indicate they are more likely to die within the first year following an event, partly due to these late interventions.

Hormonal and emotional factors

Biological transitions also significantly increase risk. Dr Yaranov pointed out that a drop in oestrogen after menopause accelerates changes in blood pressure and vascular health.

Furthermore, he emphasised that emotional well-being is a vital component of heart health. “Stress, anxiety, and depression have a stronger cardiovascular impact in women than many people realise,” he noted.

Despite these challenges, the specialist reassured the public that most heart disease is preventable through lifestyle management, regular check-ups, and increased awareness of gender-specific warning signs.
