A growing number of young, active adults are presenting with spinal conditions typically associated with much older generations, according to leading medical experts.

Dr Nikhil Jain, a consultant in spine surgery at Manipal Hospital, warns that the combination of sedentary office culture and high-intensity training is causing a surge in disc-related injuries.

Even those who appear physically fit on the outside may be masking a painful internal reality caused by poor posture and overtraining.

The primary culprit is often the repetitive strain of modern life. “Sitting hunched over a desk for hours, coupled with lifting heavy weights with tired muscles or poor form, can start to wear down the soft discs that cushion our bones,” Dr Jain explains.

This wear and tear can lead to bulging discs and chronic pain that simple rest cannot resolve. He identifies several "red flags" that gym enthusiasts should not ignore, including pins and needles in the limbs, sharp stabbing pains during movement, and increased discomfort specifically while seated.

Treatment strategies focus on decompressing the spine to facilitate natural healing. While many patients find relief through targeted physical therapy and anti-inflammatory care, severe nerve compression may require a microdiscectomy.

Dr Jain advocates for a "form over weight" philosophy in the gym to ensure long-term mobility. “Your posture during the hours you aren’t exercising matters just as much as your workout,” he warns.

By taking regular stretching breaks and listening to the body’s warning signs, young adults can prevent irreversible damage to their spinal health.
