New York ranked top in US for children’s online safety laws
New York State ranks first for tech laws that prioritise child mental health
New York State has been ranked first in the United States for technology laws designed to safeguard children, Governor Kathy Hochul announced.
This accolade stems from the "Childhood Index" created by The Anxious Generation, a health initiative co-founded by Jonathan Haidt.
The ranking evaluates how effectively state policies encourage children to spend more time in the physical world while reducing digital engagement to improve their overall mental health.
The state’s top position is attributed to a series of pioneering measures, including restrictions on addictive social media feeds and the collection of data from minors.
New York has also implemented protections regarding AI chatbots and a "bell-to-bell" ban on mobile phones in schools. These policies aim to shield children from online predators, scams, and harmful algorithms that can derail healthy development.
Governor Hochul, who has allocated billions to mental health programmes during her tenure, expressed her commitment to these digital safety standards.
“As New York’s first mom governor, I’m proud that we are leading the nation in keeping kids safe online,” she said. Haidt noted that the rating focuses on creating an environment that allows children to thrive by prioritising real-world interaction over screen content.
By establishing what the Governor describes as a "gold standard", New York now provides a comprehensive template for other states to follow.
The recognition underscores a significant shift in legislative priorities, placing the psychological well-being of the younger generation at the forefront of the state's technological and educational policy agenda.
