Simple ways to manage swollen ankles and feet while pregnant
Hormonal shifts and uterine growth are primary causes of leg swelling
A specialist in pain medicine has highlighted the physiological causes of swollen feet during pregnancy, offering practical advice to manage this frequent discomfort.
Dr Kunal Sood, a Maryland-based physician, explained on Sunday that the condition, known as oedema, typically stems from a natural increase in bodily fluids and hormonal changes that relax blood vessels.
As the uterus grows, it can obstruct blood flow from the lower limbs, leading to noticeable pooling by evening.
Dr Sood noted that the body’s adaptation to supporting new life often results in significant fluid retention.
“What you're seeing here is fluid buildup in the feet, something that commonly happens as pregnancy progresses. During pregnancy, the body holds more blood and fluid.
"Hormones relax blood vessels and the growing uterus slows down blood return from the legs that allows fluid to pool, especially by the end of the day,” he explained.
While the condition is often unavoidable, Dr Sood recommended several lifestyle adjustments to alleviate the pressure and enhance comfort:
- Elevation and hosiery: Elevating legs during rest and wearing compression socks from early morning.
- Movement: Engaging in gentle walking and regular ankle exercises to stimulate circulation.
- Dietary habits: Maintaining high hydration levels and reducing the intake of salt and highly processed foods.
- Footwear: Choosing supportive, non-restrictive shoes.
These measures are intended to make the final stages of pregnancy more manageable.
However, the physician reminded expectant mothers that such tips are for informational purposes and should not replace professional medical consultation.
