A veteran cardiovascular surgeon has identified cigarette smoking as the most destructive lifestyle choice a person can make, ranking it as the primary threat to systemic health.

Dr Jeremy London, who has over 25 years of medical experience, discussed the severe physiological toll of the habit during a recent appearance on the Mel Robbins podcast.

He explained that tobacco use inflicts widespread damage that extends far beyond the respiratory system, impacting nearly every vital organ.

“Smoking's top of the list. I mean, I cannot come up with one single thing that does as much damage to every organ in the body as smoking cigarettes,” Dr London stated.

Despite his firm medical stance, the surgeon expressed empathy for those battling nicotine dependency.

“Look, it's incredibly addictive. And I know that. And I pass no judgment because I know how difficult it is,” he noted, acknowledging the complexities of overcoming such a powerful addiction.

Drawing on decades of clinical practice, Dr London emphasised that the risks, particularly the causal link to lung cancer and cardiovascular failure, are too significant to ignore.

“That doesn't change the fact that it is the single most dangerous thing you can do for yourself,” he remarked, adding that if one were to list harmful habits, smoking would occupy the first three spots.

Medical research supports this view, showing that the chemicals in cigarettes weaken blood vessels and deprive the heart of essential oxygen.

For Dr London, the decision to quit remains the most transformative step an individual can take for their long-term survival.
