Canada approves TikTok operations after national security review
Canada had previously ordered dissolution of TikTok’s local business in November 2024
The government of Canada said it will allow TikTok to continue operating in the country and approved a related investment by the platform after completing a national security review.
The decision comes with legally binding conditions agreed to by TikTok Canada, according to a statement from Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly.
Officials said the move will help protect Canadian jobs by ensuring TikTok maintains a physical presence in the country and continues investing in Canada’s cultural sector.
Canada had previously ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s local business in November 2024, citing national security concerns over the popular short-video platform.
However, in January a federal court overturned that order, allowing TikTok to keep operating while instructing the government to review the case again.
TikTok confirmed Monday that it has reached an agreement with Ottawa that will allow its Canadian operations to remain in place.
As part of the deal, the company will introduce stronger protections for Canadians’ personal data.
According to the government, the platform will implement new security gateways and privacy-enhancing technologies designed to control access to Canadian user information and reduce the risk of unauthorised or prohibited access.
