Eddie Redmayne shares heartwarming insights into life with kids Iris and Luke

Eddie Redmayne is not just an Oscar-winning actor—he’s also a devoted dad to two children, Iris and Luke, whom he shares with wife Hannah Bagshawe.

The Les Misérables star and Bagshawe welcomed their daughter, Iris Mary Redmayne, in June 2016, followed by their son, Luke Richard Bagshawe Redmayne, in March 2018. 

Over the years, Redmayne has shared glimpses into his family life, revealing both the joys and challenges of raising children while navigating a demanding acting career.

Redmayne has often gushed about the bond between his children. Speaking to People in 2018, he said, “There are occasional moments when Hannah and I are both out of the room and we get a glimpse of Iris entertaining Luke. 

"No one makes him laugh as much as she does… these humans are interacting by themselves, so that's been pretty special.”

When Iris was born, Redmayne joked about her late arrival on The Ellen DeGeneres Show: “Iris appeared in the world and I gave her a stern talking-to.” Just two months later, the family brought her along to the Rio Olympics, a trip that made the actor nervous. 

“There was this fear like, ‘What if she cries a lot and they blame all of their lack of success on Iris?’ But she was amazing. She was so calm,” he recalled.

As she’s grown, Iris has developed her own opinions about her father’s work. During an October 2022 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Redmayne shared that Iris and Luke caught a glimpse of the trailer for The Good Nurse, in which he plays a nurse who murders patients. 

“My daughter asked me if I could maybe go back to being a wizard,” Redmayne said, referencing his role as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts series.

Luke, born in March 2018, has also been part of his father’s world. Redmayne has spoken about balancing work and family life, admitting that theater schedules can make stability a challenge. 

“The acting world has such a weird life rhythm that constantly shifts… I was trying to be quite good at going home when I could,” he told Crash magazine in 2022.

Both Iris and Luke have inherited their father’s love for the arts. After Redmayne joined the cast of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in 2024, he revealed that his children had become fans of the show’s songs. 

“They love the music to Cabaret, because the songs are so memorable and playful… sometimes the lyrics are kind of more questionable,” he admitted with a laugh.

Redmayne has made it a priority to include his children in his career milestones, hoping to sneak them into the August Wilson Theatre to see his opening number. “They’ve been such a part of this journey for me, my kids,” he said.
