Harry Styles shares how he found balance between fame and personal life
The singer credits running with helping him process the pressures of global fame
Harry Styles has revealed how he learned to protect his personal life and set boundaries after rising to global fame as a member of One Direction.
Speaking on the Q with Tom Power podcast, the 32-year-old singer reflected on the pressures of teenage stardom and the lessons he gained from navigating life in the spotlight.
“I think generally my experience of kind of being in the public domain is that you learn a lot about what you're comfortable with and what you're not comfortable with,” he said.
Styles explained that the boyband, which he joined at 16 alongside Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Zayn Malik, encouraged its members to share much of their personal lives with fans.
“When I started in the band, we were kind of encouraged to give a lot of ourselves away,” he recalled. “When I started working on my own stuff, I felt like there were parts of that where I was learning what I was comfortable with and trying to have parts of my personal life be more private.”
After One Direction went on indefinite hiatus in 2016, Styles’s solo career allowed him to reassess his relationship with fame.
He told Runner’s World that running became a personal sanctuary. “Because in some of those new experiences, there’s so much stimulation. So then running became my processing place for all of that. Really being by myself,” he said.
For Styles, running not only offered solitude but also allowed him to move through public spaces without constant attention.
“You are the observer once more, and you can go about your day in the most naked form. It’s just you, alone, moving through the world. That’s what I love about it: You don’t need anything, just a pair of shoes.”
After completing his 173-date Love On Tour in 2023, Styles took a break from performing to travel, attend events like Glastonbury, explore Berlin’s club scene, and witness the announcement of a new Pope in Rome—all while finding balance between public life and personal space.
He recently returned to performing in Manchester on March 6, 2026, coinciding with the release of his fourth studio album, Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally.
Styles will kick off the Together Together tour, featuring 67 dates in seven cities, with planned residencies in London, Amsterdam, and New York.
