Lola Young opens up about stage collapse due to near-fatal addiction
Young feared for her life, believing music hiatus was necessary following her on-stage collapse last year
Lola Young was terrified she might not survive if she didn't step away from music after collapsing on stage last year.
The singer has, for the first time, opened up about the addiction that led to the alarming incident at the All Things Go festival in New York last September, when she fell backward during her song Conceited and was helped off the stage.
She afterward cancelled all her performances for the “immediate future” to focus on recovery, before making a strong return at the Grammys.
Addressing the backlash she faced, Lola expressed, “There was a lot of negativity, but honestly? Screw it.
“Taking time off was a choice I needed to make…”
“What were my alternatives? To risk my life? My addiction was steering me there.”
During an interview with Rolling Stone, she confessed that she had overexerted herself.
She admitted, “I brought harm upon myself and self-sabotaged, and I also made the choice to go on stage and perform.”
Yet it became a pivotal moment for her.
She commented, “I am incredibly thankful it occurred because it was...a threshold, leading me to be here now, allowing me to be a better version for my fans, for the future, and for myself.”
And Lola shared that she was deeply moved by encouraging messages from stars like Katy Perry, Elton John, and Lady Gaga.
The London-based artist, who previously sought rehab help for a cocaine addiction, was nominated for five Brit Awards this year and recently won her first Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit Messy.
