Ben Wood, the American food influencer known for his burger and craft beer content, has died at age 43 after attempting to save a drowning couple in Chile.

Wood’s daughter confirmed his death in an emotional Instagram Stories tribute on March 11.

“March 9th will be for you and to remember how you gave your lives for others, as you did so many times before,” she wrote. “I love you to the moon and back.”

The incident occurred in Algarrobo, a coastal city in Chile, when a 26-year-old woman was swept into the ocean by a large wave, according to local outlets O Globo and Diario El Día.

Reports indicate that Wood, his wife, and his father all rushed into the water to rescue the woman. Only the woman’s partner survived, rescued by the Chilean Navy via helicopter.

Wood and his father died quickly at the scene, while his wife was initially pulled from the water alive but later died in the hospital, authorities said.

Born in Connecticut, Wood had lived in Chile for over a decade. He built a social media following of more than 37,000 on Instagram, where he shared videos celebrating burgers, craft beer, and culinary culture.

In addition, he founded Craftwork Chile, a mail-order beer subscription service, and Lost and Found Liquids, an indie brewing project.

Fans and followers quickly shared tributes after the news of Wood’s death. “A hug and cheers to this legend!” wrote one, while another added, “So many memories, my dear neighbor, that can’t fit in this post [heart emojis] A huge hug Ben, and wherever you go, we go.”

Wood is remembered not only for his passion for food and brewing but also for his selfless bravery in attempting to save lives at the beach.
