Medical experts are sounding the alarm over a silent healthcare crisis affecting adults over the age of thirty. Dr Manan Vora, a Mumbai-based orthopaedic surgeon, has identified sarcopenia—the gradual loss of muscle mass—as one of the most neglected health concerns.

In a detailed briefing shared on Tuesday, Dr Vora explained that this physiological decline begins quietly in the third decade of life, fundamentally altering metabolism and long-term mobility.

The impact of muscle and bone loss:

  • Sarcopenia and weight gain: As muscle mass diminishes, the body’s ability to regulate glucose becomes less efficient. Dr Vora noted: “The weight creeps up and nobody connects it back to muscle loss.”
  • Fragile bone density: Osteoporosis often develops without warning signs. The surgeon warned: “Osteoporosis does not announce itself. It shows up one day as a fracture from a fall that should have been nothing.”

To combat these age-related changes, Dr Vora advocates for consistent strength training, specifically lifting challenging weights.

He maintains that physical resistance is essential to prompt the body to adapt and strengthen. “The single most powerful thing you can do to fight both of these is pick up heavy weights and lift them,” he stated, stressing that the intensity must be sufficient to challenge the muscles.

Regardless of one's current fitness level, the surgeon urges immediate action to ensure the body remains functional in later decades.

He concluded: “Strength training is not about looking good. It is about making sure your body works for you at 50, 60, 70, and beyond.”
