Rosamund Pike opens up about surviving the 'Doom' disaster early in her career
The actress reflects on surviving one of her career’s biggest bombs with humor and gratitude
Oscar-nominated actress Rosamund Pike opened up about one of the most challenging moments in her career, starring in the 2005 sci-fi action film Doom, which she now calls “one of the worst films ever made.”
Pike, best known for her chilling turn in Gone Girl, discussed the experience on the How to Fail With Elizabeth Day podcast, describing how the high-profile video game adaptation nearly derailed her acting trajectory.
“I probably could have ended my career. It was a catastrophe,” Pike said. “You get the sense like you’re lucky to have survived that one.”
The film, based on Id Software’s popular game series, starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Karl Urban.
Pike recalled feeling completely out of her depth amid the heavy action sequences and the physically imposing cast.
“There were weights on the set… Every time a gun was brought out, it was kind of like a holy relic for the Doom fans… I was just out of my comfort zone, out of my league, out of my depth,” she said.
Despite her early success as a Bond girl in 2002’s Die Another Day and her acclaimed performance in Pride and Prejudice, Pike admits she was unprepared for the world of blockbuster action films.
The movie grossed only $58 million worldwide against a $60 million budget and received harsh reviews.
Looking back, Pike sees value in the experience. “It was probably after that that I started to do my research, because I didn’t know enough about video games… I just wasn’t that person,” she reflected.
