Doctor and social media star detained in alleged extortion plot in Machala
The arrests highlight concerns over criminal networks in Ecuador targeting residents through extortion threats
Authorities in Machala, Ecuador, arrested a 27-year-old general practitioner and social media influencer, along with two other women, during an operation targeting an alleged extortion scheme.
Diana Carolina González Arreaga, 27, who works at a public hospital, was apprehended by Ecuador’s National Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (UNASE) alongside Karen Yeleni Quezada Peñarrieta, 26, and Dayana Suyin Molina Zambrano, 30.
The operation, dubbed “Libertad 275,” took place after a local vendor reported receiving threats demanding $6,000 in exchange for the safety of himself and his family.
Authorities say the women were caught in the act while attempting to collect the money.
Officials also seized cell phones and cash, believed to be linked to the alleged crimes.
Investigators suspect the women may be affiliated with a criminal group potentially connected to “Los Lobos,” which has been active in Ecuador.
The three women are now under preventive detention as the Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation into the extortion charges.
González Arreaga’s arrest has drawn significant media attention due to her social media presence, where she was known for her luxury lifestyle and international travel, including trips to Switzerland, Colombia, and the United States.
