Richard E. Grant announces he’s set to become a grandfather
Olivia Grant and her husband, Florian Wirst, are living with the actor as they prepare for parenthood
Richard E. Grant is celebrating a joyful milestone: he’s about to become a grandfather.
The Oscar-nominated actor, 68, revealed on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast on Friday that his daughter, Olivia Grant, 37, and her husband, Florian Wirst, are expecting their first child in June.
Olivia and Florian, who married in July 2024, have been living with Grant for the past few years, sharing a home that Grant describes as “communal.”
“Not lonely. I live communally because our daughter and her now husband chose a couple of years ago to come and live in our house,” Grant said.
“So we all live together, and I’m kind of like a concierge. I do most of the shopping and the majority of the cooking because they’re both very busy. And she’s going to have a baby in June.”
This will be the first grandchild for Grant and the late Joan Washington, his wife of 38 years, who passed away in 2021.
Grant and Washington also share a son, Tom, from Washington’s previous relationship.
Grant has openly reflected on his grief in the years since Washington’s passing. Speaking on the Mad Sad Bad podcast in January, he said, “It’s four years since my wife of 38 years died, and I understand it rationally, that I will never see, touch, talk to her ever again. But emotionally, my brain cannot compute that she’s gone.”
Despite the sadness, Grant finds joy in family moments, noting the bittersweet humor and emotion he shared with Olivia and Washington.
“She’d say, ‘What is wrong with you two?’ [as we cry], ‘Oh God, pull it together.’ She was very emotionally Scottish-ly withheld, and I’ve been accused of having too many [emotions] by people,” he recalled.
