The 'complete' protein seed every vegetarian should eat daily
A leading nutritionist shares the secret to meeting protein goals without meat
A leading nutritionist has highlighted hemp seeds as an essential addition for vegetarians struggling to meet daily nutrient requirements.
According to the Mayo Clinic, sedentary adults require approximately 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, yet those avoiding meat often find it difficult to source complete proteins.
On Friday, Deepsikha Jain, a UK-trained public health nutritionist, identified hemp seeds as a superior solution because they provide all nine essential amino acids.
She noted: “Hemp seeds are a great source of protein. They are a complete source of protein with all nine essential amino acids, making them ideal for vegetarians.”
Beyond muscle repair, these seeds offer a significant profile of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The Cleveland Clinic suggests these healthy fats and antioxidants provide a wide array of systemic protections, from lowering cholesterol to protecting skin and hair.
Benefits of hemp seeds
Regular consumption of these seeds can actively support bodily functions by helping to:
- reduce inflammation,
- improve brain function
- boost brain cognition
- Consuming hemp seeds also introduces fibre and linolenic acids, which may alleviate PMS symptoms and support heart health.
How to consume hemp seeds?
To integrate this superfood into a balanced diet, the nutritionist recommends a simple daily habit. “You can easily take up to a tablespoon of hemp seeds on a regular basis. Share this with all vegetarians so they do not miss out on this nutritious food,” she advised.
Powdering the seeds allows for easy incorporation into meals, ensuring vegetarians maintain optimal health without relying solely on traditional legumes or dairy.
