Nurse killed by estranged husband days after his release without bond
Judicial questions arise after a suspect is released shortly before a fatal attack
A community in Minnesota is mourning the loss of Ashley Kittelson, a dedicated nurse and mother of three, following an apparent murder-suicide involving her estranged husband, Nicholas Kittelson.
The 35-year-old was found dead on 6 March after a local deputy discovered a running vehicle at her residence in International Falls. Investigators believe the 44-year-old fatally shot Ashley before taking his own life.
Tragically, the couple's 20-month-old son was later discovered unharmed but alone in a hotel room where Nicholas had been staying.
The incident occurred just days after Nicholas was released from jail without bond following a breach of a protection order.
In her petition for that order, Ashley had expressed profound concern for her well-being, writing, "Nicholas has threatened my life many times. He is not accepting that the marriage is over, and I fear for my safety."
Despite these warnings and subsequent charges, a judge permitted his release on 2 March on the condition that he attend a future court hearing.
Friends and family have launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Ashley’s surviving children, describing her as "a devoted mother of three young children, a compassionate nurse, and a friend to so many."
The fundraiser highlights the legacy of a woman known for the "warmth, kindness, and generosity she carried in her heart every single day."
As the investigation continues, the tragedy has sparked significant discussion regarding the efficacy of protection orders and the judicial decisions surrounding domestic violence bail hearings.
