Doja Cat reveals ‘agonising’ battle with borderline personality disorder
The artist reflects on years of pretending to be happy before confronting her struggles with BPD
Rapper and singer Doja Cat has spoken candidly about her mental health, revealing she has been struggling with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a condition she describes as “agonising.”
The 30-year-old artist shared the personal update in a video posted on TikTok, explaining that she believes she has been dealing with the disorder for most of her life.
“I’ve learned from a very young age to pretend that I like stuff, to pretend that I’m happy, to pretend that I don’t like stuff that I do, to appear like everything is okay,” she said. “I’ll get it done. And it caught up with me — and I think it always does for people. I’m now struggling with BPD.”
BPD is a mental health condition that affects how people view themselves and others and can lead to intense emotions, impulsive behavior, and unstable relationships.
Despite the challenges, the “Paint the Town Red” hitmaker said she has been actively working on her mental health and is proud of the progress she has made.
“It’s an agonising condition,” she said, noting that she has been in therapy for years. “I am so relieved and so proud of myself. I’ve made it so far, and I still make mistakes, but it is an eight-year process of curing, treatment and healing.”
During the video, Doja also defended fellow singer Chappell Roan, who recently drew attention after filming fans and paparazzi while asking them to respect her boundaries.
Doja clarified she was not suggesting Roan has BPD, but said she admired the artist’s ability to be honest and protective of herself in the public eye.
“I love that she can be uncomfortable comfortably in front of people and protect herself,” Doja said, adding that learning to be honest with herself has been an important part of her own healing journey.
She also echoed Roan’s criticism of intrusive paparazzi and individuals who pose as fans to collect celebrity autographs for resale, stressing that artists are often trying to set boundaries rather than ignore supporters.
By sharing her experience publicly, Doja said she hopes to continue growing while encouraging others to prioritize honesty and mental health.
