A Florida man faces multiple criminal charges after allegedly pushing a Sea Tow captain overboard following a dramatic rescue from a burning boat near Marco Island.

Ryan Dieter, 40, reportedly needed assistance on March 6 when his boat caught fire near Collier County.

A Sea Tow captain responded and brought Dieter aboard his vessel, only for the situation to take a shocking turn.

According to reports, Dieter allegedly pushed the captain into the water and commandeered the tow boat, leaving the rescuer stranded.

Authorities say Dieter grounded the stolen boat and fled on foot. He was later found naked in nearby mangroves by local law enforcement, while the Sea Tow captain was located safe.

“It’s disturbing to see that happen here,” local resident Nancy Cook told Gulf Coast News. “Somebody comes to help you, and then that’s what you do? It’s scary, but I’m glad the captain is okay.”

Dieter was arrested on March 7 and charged with grand theft, resisting arrest, operating a vessel while impaired, and burglary involving assault or battery, according to Collier County public records.

He is scheduled to appear in court on March 30. No bond information has been released.

Authorities with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Collier County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
