Doja Cat defends Chappell Roan after Paris paparazzi clip goes viral
The 'You Right' singer relates to Roan’s experience, sharing her own struggles with BPD and public pressure
Doja Cat has come to the defense of singer Chappell Roan after the artist drew attention for pushing back against paparazzi and autograph seekers in Paris earlier this week.
In a nearly seven-minute TikTok video, Doja Cat praised Roan for being “uncomfortable, comfortably,” highlighting the importance of setting boundaries in public.
The “Paint the Town Red” singer opened up about her own struggles, revealing she has been living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and has been in therapy for years.
While she did not suggest Roan shares the same diagnosis, Doja Cat said she sees a connection between her experiences and Roan’s handling of intrusive fans.
“I love that she can be uncomfortable, comfortably, in front of people and protect herself and be honest,” Doja Cat said.
“I had to learn how to be honest with myself. And to see her sit there and… I love it. She hasn’t hurt one person by being herself. That shows that I can do the same and say ‘fuck the paparazzi’ too.”
Doja Cat also addressed the dynamics of paparazzi and autograph-seeking culture, calling out “resellers” who obtain artists’ signatures or photos to sell for profit. She emphasized that artists’ perceived aloofness is often misunderstood.
“These artists aren’t just ignoring people because they’re full of themselves,” she said. “Chappell Roan is not hurting anybody. So we can put that shit to bed. Let her have an attitude, because I would love to have one as well, and I fucking will, hopefully, in the future.”
The clip of Roan that sparked the discussion went viral after the singer demanded space from onlookers while exiting a car in Paris.
“I’m being disregarded as a human,” Roan said in the video. “I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me.”
