Steven Spielberg defends Timothee Chalamet’s comments on ballet and opera ahead of Oscars 2026
Steven Spielberg has defended the cultural importance of ballet and opera
Steven Spielberg has defended the cultural importance of ballet and opera after comments by Timothée Chalamet suggesting the art forms no longer attract widespread public interest.
Speaking during a panel at the SXSW Conference and Festival, the acclaimed filmmaker emphasiwed the emotional impact that traditional performing arts can have on audiences.
According to reports from Variety, Spielberg said experiences such as film, concerts, ballet and opera all share the ability to deeply move viewers.
“At the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united with a whole bunch of feelings that we walk into the daylight with,” Spielberg said during the discussion.
He added that the same emotional connection can be found in other art forms, including ballet and opera, drawing applause from the audience.
The remarks followed comments Chalamet made during a town hall conversation with Matthew McConaughey in an event produced by Variety and CNN that aired in February.
While discussing the future of entertainment, Chalamet said he admired artists who advocate for certain mediums but argued that audiences ultimately decide what survives.
The actor added that he would not want to work in ballet or opera if people were no longer interested in those art forms, comments that quickly circulated online.
Following the debate, the Royal Ballet and Opera issued a statement emphasising that both art forms have historically influenced many areas of culture, including theater, film, music and fashion.
The organisation noted that ballet and opera continue to attract audiences worldwide and remain important sources of artistic inspiration.
