Winning an Academy Award is widely considered the highest honor in Hollywood, but for some actors the prestigious trophy has not guaranteed long-term success in the industry.

Several performers have spoken openly about what has often been described as the “Oscar curse,” where careers slow down or take unexpected turns after a major win.

One of the most frequently cited examples is actress Mo'Nique, who won Best Supporting Actress in 2010 for her performance in Precious

Following the victory, she claimed she was effectively “blacklisted” in Hollywood after disagreements with director Lee Daniels and producers Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey regarding the film’s promotional campaign.

Another example is Mercedes Ruehl, who won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1992 for The Fisher King alongside stars Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.

Despite the recognition, she later said major film roles became harder to secure, leading her to return to theatre, where she built a successful career on Broadway.

The story of Harold Russell is particularly unusual. The World War II veteran won two Oscars in 1947 for his performance in The Best Years of Our Lives, becoming the first amateur actor to receive the honor.

However, he chose to leave acting soon after and instead focused on education and charitable work.

Italian filmmaker and actor Roberto Benigni also made headlines after winning Best Actor and Best International Feature Film in 1999 for Life Is Beautiful.

Rather than building a Hollywood career, he returned to Italy to continue making films there.

Other actresses, including Marcia Gay Harden, Mira Sorvino and Marisa Tomei, have also faced scrutiny or career challenges after their Oscar victories.

While the golden statuette remains one of the industry’s most coveted prizes, these stories show that winning an Oscar does not always guarantee lasting Hollywood success.
