Three teenagers in Tennessee have filed a class action lawsuit against xAI, alleging the company’s technology was used to create explicit, nonconsensual images and videos depicting them as minors.

The lawsuit claims an unnamed app, powered by xAI’s large language model, enabled a perpetrator to generate highly realistic manipulated content using photos of the plaintiffs.

According to the complaint, the individual had a prior personal connection with one of the teens and used images obtained through direct messages, social media, and a yearbook.

Although the perpetrator did not use xAI’s chatbot Grok or the platform X, the plaintiffs argue that xAI is responsible for licensing its underlying technology to third-party developers, including those operating outside the United States.

The complaint accuses the company of enabling the creation of harmful content while attempting to distance itself from liability through external partnerships.

It also highlights that the generated material was not labeled as AI-made, making it appear realistic and increasing its potential harm.

The case marks the first time minors depicted in alleged AI-generated abuse material have directly sued xAI.

It follows growing scrutiny over the misuse of generative AI tools, which have been linked to the creation of large volumes of manipulated explicit content.

The plaintiffs say the experience has caused significant distress, emphasising the lasting impact of having their likeness tied to fabricated but lifelike material circulating online.
