Samsung ends production of Galaxy Z TriFold after three months
Samsung is planning to discontinue its first triple-screen foldable phone
Samsung is planning to discontinue its first triple-screen foldable phone less than three months after its introduction in the US market.
According to an unidentified Samsung representative speaking to Bloomberg, the sales of the $2,899 Galaxy Z TriFold will begin to slow down in Korea before being pulled from the US market once remaining stock is depleted.
This follows a report from the Korean news source Dong-A Ilbo on Monday indicating that the TriFold will receive its final domestic restock on today, March 17.
Samsung's website ceased providing future restock information for the foldable earlier this month, and it's currently marked as “sold out” in the US.
The device was only available for purchase directly through Samsung. Dong-A Ilbo notes that only 6,000 units were stocked and sold in Korea since its December 12 release.
On the other hand, Huawei has already advanced to the second iteration of its trifold phone, although the original Mate XT Ultimate eventually reached markets outside of China, the Mate XTs remains exclusive to China.
Some individuals have located the foldable in Samsung Experience Stores located in Texas and New York as reported by Bloomberg, yet online stock appears to be dwindling in the US.
Once completely depleted, purchasing options will be through third-party resellers or used devices, so exercise caution — our search to acquire one via eBay went about as expected.
High production expenses reportedly drive the decision, as component prices have increased to a level where continuing sales would not be profitable for Samsung.
In a discussion with Bloomberg last month, the head of Samsung’s mobile sector, Won-Joon Choi, mentioned that the company hasn't decided on whether to release a successor to the TriFold, though features like the bigger display and broader aspect ratio might eventually make their way to Samsung’s other foldables.
