“I prefer not to use AI to replace creative talent; I aim to leverage AI for content creation,” expressed Lee Sangwook, Head of the AI Content Lab at MBC C&I, earlier today during a panel centered on AI at Filmart in Hong Kong.

Sangwook was accompanied on the panel by Yuhang Cheng, COO at Midjourney China Lab; Fu Binxing, CEO of China Huace Film & TV; Ricky Lau, AI Specialist Lead at Google Hong Kong; and Yunan Zhang, Vice President at MiniMax.

The panel is one of several discussions focused on AI at this year's Filmart. This disruptive technology is a major point of interest here in Hong Kong.

However, this afternoon’s panelists were less worried about the potential challenges AI may bring and instead highlighted the advantages it offers to artists.

Yuhang shared with the Hong Kong audience that the “fear” surrounding AI arises from the “uncertainty of creation.”

Yuhang further commented that creation encompasses the “full expression of an artist’s emotions, which cannot be substituted by AI.”

“The AI can only give form to the visions that artists conceive. Our goal is to use AI to transform these visions and allow artists to devote more time to brainstorming, designing, and refining AI-generated works,” Yuhang elaborated, noting that advancements in AI tech could herald a new era of artistic empowerment.

“In the past, completing a piece of work could take several weeks, but AI now allows you to accomplish it in mere hours,” she explained.

“Previously, if you envisioned an idea, you would have needed actors to bring it to life, but now the technology allows machines to visualize your concept instantly.”

Aside from AI panels, a variety of AI-produced content is on display this year at Filmart.

MBC C&I has introduced Raphael, an entirely AI-generated 80-minute feature, as part of its lineup at the market.

The movie was crafted using an assortment of AI tools, including those from Midjourney and ElevenLabs.

Lau shared with the attendees that adopting a hybrid strategy with AI tools will underpin future AI-generated productions and advised filmmakers to become adept in a diverse range of AI tools.

Filmart concludes on March 20.
